In a significant move ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League, Shreyas Iyer has been formally announced as the Punjab Kings’ new captain. In the 2024 IPL, Iyer guided the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to victory. At the IPL 2025 mega auction, the Mohali-based club paid INR 26.75 crore for it. With his nomination, the 30-year-old hitter becomes the first player in IPL history to serve as captain of three separate clubs. In November 2024, the mega auction took place in Jeddah.
Proven Leadership
With a stellar year in which he won several trophies in a variety of forms, Iyer’s leadership abilities are well-established. Iyer led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024.
He was a member of the team that won the Irani Trophy and the Ranji Trophy. His reputation as a leader who can propel victory under duress has been enhanced by these accomplishments.
The dynamic captain-coach team of Iyer and Ricky Ponting, who previously collaborated to lead the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, has returned with Iyer’s appointment. Ponting has been quite complimentary of Iyer’s leadership skills.
Iyer: The Best Option
Satish Menon, the CEO of the Punjab Kings, expressed his excitement as well, saying that Iyer has always been their first pick for the captaincy position.Menon remarked, “Shreyas is the ideal addition to our team.” He is the perfect candidate to lead Punjab Kings to new heights because of his leadership qualities and skill on the field. We are sure that we can win our first IPL championship with him leading the team and Ricky Ponting supporting him.
